HOBOKENi RELAUNCH - JUNE 2008
Since 1995 Hobokeni has been dedicated to serving the residents of Hoboken with the most relevant information and listings. We have read all the emails both positive and negative. We have read each one and not only used each to improve our site but we took every word personally. This kept us active and conscious of possible upgrades and improvements. In an effort to continue this service and relationship with the users of Hobokeni we began searching and testing current technologies regarding content management and community based software. As we tested we discovered that what we envisioned as our new site did not seem possible. One of our developers then suggested we review a recent version of a particular software that we had tested over three years ago. We were ecstatic to see their current updated version made our ideas possible. We jumped in with two feet and now hope to launch within days, hoursÉminutes! Some of your fellow users had been asked early on to Òtake a peek behind the curtainÓ and the criticisms were positive.
Considering the history of Hobokeni it was very difficult to transfer the existing forums to the new site (HobokenChat). This was also true of the classifieds (which we upgraded in May of 2007 Ð hobokeni.kaango.com). Our goal is to embed these sections into the new Hobokeni. This will happen very soon in the near future as we are developing our own branded Forums that will be included in the re-launch of the sadly neglected JerseyCityi and then implemented into Hobokeni. We decided that delaying the re-launch of Hobokeni was not an option since we had so many new features to unveil.
A little about the new site:
As Hobokeni closes in on its fourteenth year we have discovered something about "Content." Aside from Forums and Classifieds almost ALL content on a Community Site can be classified as two entry types Directory Listings and Events. All Businesses, Services, Entertainment, Transportation, etc, etc can be found in the Directory. This means everything and anything a resident may possibly be looking for will have an entry under a relevant category. Even the organizations or groups which sponsor or organize an event will have a listing in the Directory. All other listings are current events and can be found in the Events / Calendar section. Events listings are complete with descriptions and upcoming similar events. All entries have "tags" which help users to navigate to similar content and entries.
Obviously in the past four years Blogs have become the center of attention for anyone willing to give their opinion and for those who desire to read those opinions on the net. The Blog has become all-powerful. We now have very advanced Blog software and will be able to have Text, Photo and Video Blogs. We have a list of trusted bloggers who will have direct access to our system to upload entries on any subject effecting Hoboken life and beyond.
In the very near future we will unleash many more features including advanced search abilities, mapping, etc, etc. Please enjoy, test and tryout our new features. We will be compiling and FAQ and will have it ready by weeks end. As always if you have any questions or comments please contact us at webmaster@hobokeni.com.
Get ready, iSites are coming!

2008 Year of The Potato
From the pages of the International Year of The Potato website:
The celebration of the International Year of the Potato (IYP) will raise awareness of the importance of the potato - and of agriculture in general - in addressing issues of global concern, including hunger, poverty and threats to the environment.
Over the next two decades, the world''s population is expected to grow on average by more than 100 million people a year. More than 95 percent of that increase will occur in the developing countries, where pressure on land and water is already intense. A key challenge facing the international community is, therefore, to ensure food security for present and future generations, while protecting the natural resource base on which we all depend. The potato will be an important part of efforts to meet those challenges...

Go Club
Mondays
The Hoboken Go Club meets every Monday evening to play the Asian game of Go (Wei
Ch''i, Baduk). Go is a fascinating board game that originated in China more than
4,000 years ago. Also known as baduk, wei ch''i, weiqi, and igo, it is played today
by millions of people, including thousands in the United States. In Japan, Korea,
China, and Taiwan, it is far more popular than chess is in the West, and professional
players compete for large cash prizes. Its popularity in this country continues
to grow, more than fifty years after the founding of the American Go Association.
It is said that the rules of Go can be learned in minutes, but that it can take
a lifetime to master the game. Two players alternate in placing black and white
stones on a large (19x19 line) ruled board, with the aim of surrounding territory.
Stones are never moved, and only removed if they are completely surrounded. For
further information email lruss@stevens-tech.edu,
